Andrew Weldon Drives to First ASA Challenge Division Finish

Jennerstown, Penn. (Monday July 31, 2006) - Andrew Weldon started 26th and finished 14th in Saturday nights ASA Late Model Challenge Series event at Jennerstown Speedway in Jennerstown, Pa. Weldon spun in qualifying making contact with the outside wall leaving damage to the rear of his no. 07 SS Racing Development Chevrolet. He was driving on radial race tires for the first time in his young career when he learned a tough lesson about the touchy characteristics of radial tires. Weldon had to battle from the rear of the field for the start of the event. He quickly discovered that the Challenge division drivers were no easy match. But Weldon and the SS Racing team as they have all year kept a positive persistence towards their challenge.

“As I was trying to fight my way to the front I quickly realized it wouldn’t be an easy job,” said Weldon. “The Challenge drivers are really, really good and have a lot of experience over me.”

Heading into the halfway break at lap 100 the SS Racing crew led by Crew Chief, Butch Miller went to work making adjustments for the second 100 laps of the race. Weldon was one-lap down and started the second half on the inside of the leaders. Respectfully he gave the leaders room to race dropping back to the mid-pack, but taking note of the faster drivers. After settling into the second half of the race Weldon began to show he was learning the track and adapting to a long tough race scenario. He attempted to get around two cars that he appeared to be faster then, but was continually held up. Only five cars in the field finished on the lead lap.

The SS Racing team and Andrew Weldon knew heading into the race it would be a tough challenge. And that’s exactly what it was. But Weldon continued to show he is a developing driver who can handle tough situations and make the most of them. He continues to learn and grow through all his experiences good or bad.

“This was a great learning experience to say the least,” said Weldon. “I didn’t want to tear up the car and I felt really bad about the qualifying incident. But each tough race or difficult situation I am really learning a lot from.”

“I’m grateful to have a team that keeps their heads up and keeps supporting me through every up and down,” added Weldon. “I hope to have the opportunity to run more with the ASA Late Model Challenge Division.”

Andrew Weldon and the SS Racing team will return to the ASA Late Model Southern Division on August 5th at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Virginia.
