Indianapolis, Ind. (Monday August 14, 2006) - Andrew Weldon continued his streak of top five finishes last Saturday night at Illiana Speedway in Schererville, Ind. Weldon piloted the No. 07 SS Racing Development Chevy to a 3rd place qualifying effort and 3rd place finishing position. And it was the 3rd consecutive race that Weldon has placed inside the top five. He started 7th in the pre-feature heat race and finished 9th. The team led by Butch Miller used that race for some setup experimenting.
“We had a good qualifying run, so Butch though the heat race would be a good chance to try something different in our setup,” said Weldon. “It ended up making the car too loose and we wound up 9th.”
Weldon started 7th for the main event feature. Held up by the car in front of him he watched as three cars passed him on the outside early in the race. But after clearing the slower traffic he began to work his way up to the leaders. Weldon moved up seven spots during the race. Toward the final laps he was the fastest car on the track, but simply ran out of time to catch the two leaders. A win is what every driver wants, but Weldon and his team were still pleased with the outcome.
“Butch and John gave me a great car again,” explained Weldon. “The day started off kind of rough, but we all pulled together a great finish. Of course, I would have liked to win and felt that I had the car to do it. But there just wasn’t enough time.”
Weldon has some time off from his duties at SS Racing. He’s not scheduled for another race until November 4th at Music City Motorplex in Nashville, Tenn. He and the SS Racing team are considering a revised schedule to include more races. Weldon won’t be out of the driver’s seat though. He’s currently 4th in the championship points for the Sprint Car class at Bridgeport Speedway, which he runs under his own team.
“I’m not exactly sure on the rest of the season’s schedule,” said Weldon. “But I have come a long way since my first pavement race back in January. I’m going to focus on my dirt racing and making a charge for the championship. But I hope to be back in the 07 SS Racing car soon.”
