Radford, Virginia (Monday August 7, 2006) - Andrew Weldon started 14th and finished 4th on Saturday night at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Virginia. It was the first-ever start for Weldon at the track and was his best finish to date in the ASA Late Model Series (ASALMS). The SS Racing team led by veteran short track legend, Butch Miller, returned to the Southern Division of the ASALMS after spending several weeks racing at Illiana Speedway’s weekly racing events. The step back for the team and developmental driver proved to be a step forward.
“We struggled in the first part of the year and decided to race at the same track for a few weeks,” said Butch Miller, Crew Chief/Coach for the SS Racing No. 07 team. “Andrew had tremendous growth at Illiana and has shown a great deal of improvement in the last few races. He’s really using his head and driving smart.”
Weldon is in his first year of pavement racing. He didn’t start off bad by any means according to Miller. But the team felt they may have jumped ahead a little two quick. The adjustment to the schedule put Weldon at Illiana Speedway for 4-consecutive races. In those races he got a win and three top tens. SS Racing decided to return to the touring series of the ASALMS at Motor Mile Speedway. Weldon was happy to return to the series at Motor Mile and he was also happy with his finish.
“I feel like we have made leaps and bounds as a team in the past month,” said Weldon.
As for Motor Mile Speedway, “The more laps I drove the more I liked it,” commented Weldon. “It was a very unique place and required a driving line I wasn’t used to. Butch and John (SS Racing Crew) got it hooked up really good.”
“It was awesome finishing 4th. It says a lot for how we are coming along as a team and how much I am learning as a driver,” added Weldon. “I had a shot at 3rd but would have had to make a risky move to pass and I was determined to maintain a top five finish without any car damage.”
The SS Racing team and Andrew Weldon are discussing the remainder of the 2006 schedule. Stay tuned to www.SSRacingOnline.com for all the latest updates and news.
